My art works always express some vagueness of the role myself in local culture now, the vagueness is excitated by apperceiving of my body. I am interested to show the crash concealed back of the vagueness. So I hope it looks harmonious and serious like preaching but keeps back an imbroglio and self-mockery.

30 years old, from Paris, France, 3 years in China (always in Shanghai)

My work brought me to China three years ago. I have been working for a French market research company for 3 years in Shanghai, but I recently quit my job to follow my passion: travelling.

As I travelled around Shanghai and in China for a few years, I progressively discovered some really great scenic spots. On the other side, many of my friends seemed to be searching for some nice places to quickly escape the sometimes exhausting Shanghai.

So it progressively made sense to create my own guidebook, and after a few months of work, I launched the travel guide “40 weekend breaks from Shanghai” in July 2011.

The idea is to bring the best places around Shanghai into one single book, so everybody living here can easily choose a weekend destination and relax!

Lucinda Holmes

Lucinda Holmes

Lucinda Holmes inhabits the world of Diagramism, a complex world that foretells the future and crosses out the past. Diagramism lies to the east of Modernism and to the south of Minimalism. As her drawn lines meander through the blank page the collect trails of the online information graphic, the text on the page, the cell of a spread sheet. Unbeknown to the author the world of Diagramism is a subterfuge that passes comment on the present world of economic decline and corrupted growth; subliminal messages abound. Slowly, slowly each diagram is becoming interwoven into its own story, where the plot is constantly shifting and what it actually represents is transitory and regularly elusive.

I have started doing and learning paper mache or “papier mache” about 8 years ago and only with a small illustrated English book as my teacher and guide.
The basic rules of papier mache are not difficult and the materials are not expensive either. One very good thing about it is that main ingredient of this craft or art is paper which can be easily obtained everywhere from used newspapers, leaflets, cartons…without spending a dime.
Paper mache is one of Iran’s famous handicrafts and is mostly used to make boxes, penholders as well as bookbinding which is not made any more. What I thought was missing was a new approche to this craft. To my wonder no one did a serious job in papier mache in my country except repeating the same things over and over.
What I try to do is to try new materilas, new shapes, new forms and new technics. I have studied the different technics in other countries and I try to make the best of it. In simple words I still experiment and experience. One thing is sure about my works, they have the taste of my culture. I enjoy working with paper and colors.I enjoy creating and I hope others would like my paper works as well.

A COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION TO BRIDGE THE URBAN AND THE RURAL
桥接城乡的社区复兴

The Design Harvests Project explores the relationship between the urban center of Shanghai and rural villages on nearby Chongming Island, considering the urban and rural as a complementary yin yang relationship to maintain identity but promote exchanges of resources.
The project is a collaborative social innovation experience that gathers committed creative individuals and local farmers and craftsmen to form a growing community. The Innovation Hub is the key infrastructure that facilitate resources exchange between the Shanghai metropolis and the urban county of Chongming.
Located in Xianqiao Village in central east of the Island, the Hub is a three-storey modern building surrounded by an embrace of fields, greenery, country houses and a channel. Function-wise, it’s a combination of working spaces, hostel, farming area, garden, cafeteria and spaces for multiple-purpose gatherings or making creative outputs.
By attracting urban creative communities to the hub for short-term resident working or tourism, or engaging them into socio-cultural and professional activities, resources of various kinds from the city will be visible and accessible. By redefining and combining the resources from the city and the island itself, innovative business models will be created.

DESIGN HARVESTS PARTNERS
The Chongming Sustainable Community Project is a current project of D&I Tongji University in collaboration with Studio TAO, and involves the local government of Chongming Island, village communities, business partners and university resources to form a network of stakeholders. The project is a pilot project for the DESIS-China Network (Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability).

Dakini Yan Lu

Dakini Yan Lu

Dakini Yan Lu(陆彦,写小说时笔名为阿伦特), a Chinese novelist based in Shanghai.
I have published two novels in China. The first was Good bye, My Arendt (《喊哪,阿伦特》,2006).
The second was Ashes and Zest (《爱到Z》,2011). Just finished my third novel Empty Bed Blues(《空床布鲁斯》).
Good bye, My Arendt was a biography-novel, about a Chinese little girl who struggled against a difficult growing-up and fulfilled her dream to be a novelist. Ashes and Zest was about two poor Chinese writers tried to be live and carry on in Shanghai, and they failed. The Empty Bed Blues was about a Chinese woman met with several men from western countries.
I try to find where the Chinese should stand and what we need to do in this global era.
